Technology as religion | VPRO Documentary

Until recently, religions had a monopoly on heaven. But religion has a new competitor: dataism. The belief that ultimately everything, including life itself, is nothing more than data.

The promise is a programmable paradise, where artificial intelligence can give us eternal life, happiness and beauty.

What does dataism mean for the future of religion and spirituality? And can it offer us, in addition to numerous practical blessings, meaning? Filmmaker Hans Busstra, who left the church as a reformed minister’s son, searches for meaning and spirituality in the tech age.

The giant leaps in language technology — and who’s left behind | Kalika Bali

Visit http://TED.com to get our entire library of TED Talks, transcripts, translations, personalized talk recommendations and more.

Thousands of languages thrive across the globe, yet modern speech technology — with all of its benefits — supports just over a hundred. Computational linguist Kalika Bali dreams of a day when technology acts as a bridge instead of a barrier, working passionately to build new and inclusive systems for the millions who speak low-resource languages. In this perspective-shifting talk, she outlines what happens when a language is omitted from the digital landscape — and what can be gained when communities keep pace with the future.

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design — plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. You’re welcome to link to or embed these videos, forward them to others and share these ideas with people you know.

Is technology really ruining your life? | David Ellis | TEDxLancasterU

https://youtube.com/watch?v=mNKN4dHGQKg

It is almost impossible to avoid laptops, social media, emails, and smartphones.  Many of these technologies were developed to help organise our lives, while others promise to keep us fitter and happier for longer. But does all this technology have unintended consequences? David Ellis holds a 50th Anniversary Lectureship in Psychology at Lancaster University and an Honorary Research Fellowship at The University of Lincoln. Much of his work considers how recent methodological developments in technology and data collection (often referred to as digital traces) can reveal information about individuals and their behaviour. He has published on these topics in The Lancet Public Health, the International Journal of Neural Systems, Computers in Human Behavior, Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking and other journals. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
