Welcome to the first day of Technology and Power: Public Seminar.

Please read this important information about the event before we start:

– English closed captions are available for the event. You can enable them at the bottom bar of the video, by clicking ‘Subtitles/Closed Captions’.
– The seminar will be recorded and most of the talks will be published on our YouTube channel, but respecting the wishes of some of the speakers, a few of the talks won’t be shared afterwards. We will send you an email once the talks are published on our channel so you can re-watch and share. 
– We’d like to encourage everyone who attends and is comfortable to do so, to engage in the YouTube chat -which is enabled for the session- or to share thoughts, reflections and comments on Sli.do. We are committed to create a safe space for folks to share and hold a conversation with respect. By joining the event, you are agreeing to follow the following Discussion Guidelines:

* Keep an open heart and mind to all discussions

About this Event:

The Technology and Power: Public Seminar will consist of a series of presentations from an engaging group of early career researchers, artists, advocates, and activists who will introduce concepts of human rights in the technology sector, report on a selection of ongoing tech-related grassroots human rights advocacy campaigns, and explore possibilities and methodologies for alternative technological futures.

For those participating in the Technology and Power Workshop, the public seminar will provide framing and theory to put the hands-on workshop activities into context.

Technology Is Reinventing Humanity | Jordan Nguyen | TEDxSydney

As advances in augmented and virtual technology reinvent our relationship with ‘reality’, we are continually confronted with ever-more complex ethical and philosophical dilemmas. Making virtual interactive copies of human beings is now more than just a possibility. But once we open that door, how do we deal with the quandaries that lie inside?

Dr Jordan Nguyen’s mission in life is to improve the lives of as many people as possible and to be a driving force behind positive human and technological evolution into the future. He believes the relationship between humanity and technology is constantly changing and its role in our lives is becoming more integrated, leading us to a future that is ‘Beyond Superhuman’.

Jordan completed a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in 2012, and was awarded into the prestigious UTS Chancellor’s List.

Jordan has been on the board of directors for Object: The Australian Design Centre, is a member of the board for the NSW Medical Technology Knowledge Hub, and taught project development in Artificial Intelligence design and Biomedical Instrumentation for engineering masters students at University of Technology Sydney.
