Hibernation Technology

Hibernation is actually a state of deep sleep that animals such as bears use to save their energy and survive a season without eating much. It is characterized by low temperature, slow breathing, and heart rate. Basically, it is a state of reduced metabolic activity. Many years ago, space scientists proposed the idea of using hibernation for space exploration. However, the scientists, till this date, have not been able to create the means of scientific hibernation. Obviously, even if it isn’t the stuff of fantasy, it is not easy to extend the principle of animal hibernation to humans. NASA is conducting research on extended sleep, though. Let’s look at how it is going to work.
The theory of Hibernation for Interplanetary Voyage

Artificial hibernation would be obtained through Cryosleep. In the process of Cryosleep, an astronaut would be put into a state of suspended animation with the help of a drug, chamber, or something else very cold. Therapeutic hypothermia is a process that doctors have used to save hundreds of lives that would have been otherwise lost. In medical science, there are many dire treatments that incorporate the use of cold temperatures. So, the doctors, in order to treat the patients, cool them down with the ice packs, chilled water pads, or make them inhale a controlled coolant, known as Rhinochill. The chemical reactions taking place inside the body become slow and that is how therapeutic hypothermia works. Diseases such as traumatic brain or spinal cord injury in people find their treatment with therapeutic hypothermia.
Therapeutic hypothermia and Torpor

Therapeutic hypothermia runs adjacent to ‘torpor’ in the field of space travel. The creation of a torpor (state of the unconscious) stasis habitat would cool down the astronaut body’s core temperature in a few hours. The astronaut’s body temperature would lower to 89.6 Fahrenheit. This would lower the metabolic rate by 50-70 percent. While he/she would be in the unconscious state, various sensors would be hooked up to him/her to monitor his/her condition.

During torpor, the hibernated person would still receive nutrition and hydration through Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (means of feeding through a tube). A catheter would help to drain urine. However, the maximum time a person would be kept in hibernation would only be two weeks. The participant would be allowed to resuscitate for a few days, and then go into hibernation for another cycle. There would not be one astronaut but at least six of them coexisting in a torpor state inside the chamber. They would take turns to remain awake for two-three days, ensuring the needs of the other members and the spaceship.

Elon Musk Interview from Air Warfare Symposium about SpaceX Crew Dragon & NASA 2020

SpaceX will land and splashdown their American astronauts after undocking with the International Space Station. They previously docked to the ISS for their DM-2 mission which launched American astronauts on an American rocket from American soil on May 30, 2020.

Undocking Live Event.

SpaceX launched the second demonstration mission of its Crew Dragon vehicle as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Transportation Capability Program (CCtCap), carrying two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. This mission is the first crewed flight to launch from the United States since the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. DM-2 demonstrates the Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon’s ability to safely transport crew to the space station and back to Earth and it is the last major milestone for certification of Crew Dragon. NASA has extend the mission duration to allow the astronauts to participate as Expedition 63 crew members.

StarTalk Podcast: Technology and Us, with Ainissa Ramirez and Neil deGrasse Tyson

Do we control technology or does technology control us? On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson joins forces with first-time comic co-host Negin Farsad and material scientist and engineer Ainissa Ramirez, PhD, to explore how technology has shaped the world as we know it. Ainissa is also the author of a new book The Alchemy of Us: How Humans and Matter Transformed One Another.

Why do we have a love/hate relationship with technology? Negin tells us why she thinks she was born in the wrong era. We discuss the rise of the printing press and our trio nerds out on calligraphy and quill pens. Then, we answer fan-submitted Cosmic Queries on how technology has impacted our lives. Ainissa tells us why we’re losing our ability to empathize. Has tech changed our biology? You’ll learn how the internet is re-wiring your brain. We explore how the internet has changed our memories from remembering what the information was to where the information is stored.

We debate which piece of technology has advanced us the furthest. Ainissa lobbies for steel, Negin gives her thoughts on the printing press, and Neil keeps it simple with the wheel and axle. Then we wonder – how much of technology is reversable? We reminisce on the outcry when Google Glass first launched. Discover more about innovations originally intended for space that have been successfully commercialized in our society.

We dive into the socioeconomics of technology: will there be a day when technology divides us even more? Are we mature enough to use technology? Is tech more suspectable to conspiracy thinking? Lastly, we discuss which technology worries us the most, why young people don’t get overwhelmed by technology, and how anti-tech and anti-science movements can slow progress. All that, plus, we ponder how to make sure technology is beneficial to all humankind.
