In an unprecedented technological feat, Linus Tech Tips (LTT) has shattered the world record for calculating the most digits of pi, reaching an astounding 300 trillion digits. This monumental achievement was officially recognized by Guinness World Records.
The project spanned nearly seven and a half months, operating continuously without a single SSD failure. The computation was powered by a high-performance storage cluster comprising 2.2 petabytes of KIOXIA’s CM Series 30.72TB and CD Series 15.36TB PCIe NVMe SSDs. These SSDs were configured in a network-attached storage environment connected to a dual-CPU compute server.
The endeavor was not just a test of computational limits but also a testament to hardware reliability and endurance. The project incurred substantial costs, with electricity expenses alone exceeding $6,000 over the 190-day period.
