Marvell Technology CEO on closing $10 billion Inphi Corp deal

“It’s a very clean deal and there was overwhelming support from all of our customers globally, including in China,” Marvell Technology CEO Matt Murphy said. Subscribe to CNBC Pro to access the full episode of Mad Money: https://cnb.cx/32CKile

Marvell Technology officially completed its $10 billion acquisition of Inphi, expanding its reach in data centers and 5G network infrastructure.

The deal closed on Wednesday, about one month after China approved the acquisition, Marvell CEO Matt Murphy told CNBC’s Jim Cramer.

“We’re thrilled to have gotten approval from China back in March… I think ahead of a lot of people’s expectations,” Murphy said in an interview that aired Wednesday on “Mad Money.” “It’s a very clean deal and there was overwhelming support from all of our customers globally, including in China.”

Marvell’s semiconductors compete with Broadcom’s products that run data through copper-based cables. Inphi’s chips transfer data over fiber-optic cables and its products are used by data-dependent companies like Amazon, Alphabet’s Google and Facebook.

Murphy said the tie-up makes it more viable for growth in the key end markets of 5G, cloud and automotive.

Marvell also shifted its domicile to Delaware, a state that offers tax advantages to corporations, from Bermuda as part of the acquisition.

Dr. Ford Tamer, who served as president and chief executive officer of Inphi for almost 10 years, joins Marvell’s board as a director.

Since the merger was announced in late October, Marvell shares have climbed 19% through Wednesday’s close.

Tesla Batteries Production Technology Is Unbeatable

If there is one challenge Elon Musk faces when creating faster electric vehicles with more mileage, it’s batteries. Tesla has already rolled out plans for the new Roadster and claims it can achieve an acceleration of 60 mph in 1.9 seconds. The only way to provide the juice for that is an amazing, state-of-the-art battery.

It all began in 2014
To understand why Tesla is number 1 in battery technology today, we need to go back to 2014. That’s when Tesla had partnered up with Japanese company Panasonic to manufacture its batteries. There was a time when people complained about the cost od Tesla’s all-electric cars.

Tesla built a gigantic battery-making factory called the Gigafactory
Once Tesla got a proper hold on the battery market, the company then went on to build a super battery factory right in the middle of the Nevada Desert named the Gigafactory.

The Gigafactory reduced the battery aging process
Working with Panasonic reduced many of the manufacturing costs like stubborn delays and hiccups. Moreover, the entire process was perfectly streamlined at the Gigafactory. It’s a gigantic facility that scaled up cell aging, a major factor in the manufacturing process.

Do not need to move away from technology: BlackRock’s Rieder

Rick Rieder, BlackRock global fixed income CIO and head of global allocation team, join ‘Fast Money Halftime Report’ to discuss the uncertainty in the market, inflation fears and how it affects the investment strategy. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi

BlackRock’s Rick Rieder told CNBC on Thursday he was not overly concerned about stocks simply because of the recent move higher in bond yields.

Rieder, chief investment officer of global fixed income at the world’s largest money manager, made his remarks on “Halftime Report” as the major U.S. equity indexes fell sharply. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite declined furthest, down more than 2.5%.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose to a one-year high above 1.6% at one point Thursday. However, Rieder said it’s important to take the uptick in yields — which move inversely to prices — in historical context, particularly when forecasting a strong economic recovery from the Covid pandemic.

He pointed to the inflation-adjusted yields, known as real rates, to illustrate his perspective.

“We started from negative 1%. The history of real rates, on average the last 25 years, the average has been about 1.5% positive and usually, when you get this sort of economic growth, you’re talking about real rates that go to 3%, 4%, 5% positive,” Rieder said. “We may get to zero percent real rates, so you still have an extremely accommodative environment. There’s a little bit of uncertainty, the [volatility] picks up in the markets and then you recalibrate, but I’m not that worried about equities.”

The Fight Over Police Use Of Facial Recognition Technology

In light of recent protests, facial recognition has come under scrutiny for the way in which it’s deployed by police departments. In response, IBM, Amazon and Microsoft have all stated that they’ll either stop developing this tech, or stop selling it to law enforcement until regulations are in place.

At least half of Americans are reportedly in a facial recognition database, potentially accessible by the local police department as well as federal government agencies like ICE or the FBI. It’s not something you likely opted into, but as of now, there’s no way to be sure exactly who has access to your likeness.

These promises may not make a big difference though, as a number of powerful but lesser-known companies like Clearview AI and Rank One are leaning into the market. They say this tech helps catch dangerous criminals and makes communities safer.

Activists and researchers across the political spectrum nonetheless have serious concerns about privacy, algorithmic bias, and a lack of regulation.
